Educational haunt!

Since the very beginning of my life, only the statement I heard is to *BE EDUCATED! BE EDUCATED! BE EDUCATED!*. If something my family and relatives value is *Education*. Subconsciously, I have always looked up for the meaning of it through every experience I was into!

All the great philosophers, politicians, educators, change makers, scientists have given so much profound statement of what education means to them reflecting on their experience with life, which I see on the walls of the schools painted. At that time, I didn’t understand what they mean. When I was small, I thought excelling by getting high grades was the purpose of education. So, it saddens me at the same with the realization that I was an average child who can achieve good grades to pass the exam but the word excellent was never in my achievement. That time, it meant I wasn’t going to be educated. Again, I begin to search the answers of *Why I needed the good grades?*, slowly and gradually I came to conclusion that, good grades means good job and good money and standardized life. As my life passed by, I encountered people who have excelled and achieved so good in the academic year and were jobless. When I talked with them, they gave me the concluding statements; “Nepal Education is of no use.” It isn’t good enough to secure your future. It has no international standard; it can’t compete around the globe and on and on. Then, it gave me moment to think and gave me time to rethink about; What Education is for? On the way, I met some people who didn’t have any formal education but still they were earning a lot and had a happy life. Again, that hit me right on my mind and I begin to doubt and had lot of question on whether I should BE EDUCATED or NOT! My parents were also same-no formal education-earning sufficient money but they were so committed for us to have a quality education. Then, I wonder, there must be something more than earning money by being educated. What was that for? Finding the answer was my commitment. Then, I looked at the people who were jobless despite of having excellent degree and the people who didn’t have academic degree and were doing good business. Then I found the answer, it was SKILL in between of all playing the role. Then my perception changed from BEING EDUCATED to BEING A SKILLFUL HUMAN RESOURCE! Knowledge with skill must be the ultimate purpose of education and it’s the need as well demand of every sector. These answer, came from lot of observation with reality and it took me lot of years. Still you may ask, “Why academic degree, if you have enough skill?” Education without Skill and Skill without Education is both incomplete for me. Whether to have a formal education or not depends on the kind of life you want to lead or kind of future you want to pursue or the kind of dream you are fantasying. It also broadens your horizon of perceiving any idea or challenge or how to use your skill in an effective way. Now,I am seeking for an answer to “What does a quality education mean or look like for every Nepali child in real sense?” In a sequence to encounter the response I am teaching Mathematics in a public school, which is located in the hills of Simle-4, Lalitpur, as a Teach for Nepal Fellow.

You can teach a student a lesson for a day;but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives.--Clay P. Bedford
